Learning Biology with a pocket heart: At Colaiste Iognaid in Galway, teachers are encouraged to use new technologies to enliven the curriculum. In the biology Leaving Cert class, for example teacher Clodagh Mitchell uses Pocket Heart, a novel computer ‘app’ that teaches how the human heart works through interactive 3D graphics. Developed by Irish company eMedia, the Pocket Heart can be used on an iPhone or on an ordinary PC.

School vice principal of Coláiste Iognáid Catherine Hickey Ó Maoláin tells us the Galway school won its “mobile classroom” of 22 tablet PCs and software as a Hewlett Packard Innovation in Education grant and these are rotated between different classes. Leaving Cert biology teacher Clodagh Mitchell says 3D visualisations of human and plant biology are becoming “an essential tool for teaching”.
