Rotatores

Rotatores

Anatomy

One of the intrinsic muscles of the back.

Consists of rotatores cervicus, thoracis and lumborum.

Rotatores cervicis:
Origin: Articular processes of cervical vertebrae.
Insertion: Spinous processes of cervical vertebrae.

Rotatores thoracis:
Origin: Transverse processes of thoracic vertebrae.
Insertion:Spinous processes of thoracic vertebrae.

Rotatores lumborum:
Origin: Mammillary processes of lumbar vertebrae.
Insertion: Spinous processes of lumbar vertebrae.

Key Relations:
Deepest muscle group of transversospinalis muscle. Best developed in the thoracic region.

Functions

Acting unilaterally rotate vertebrae ipsilaterally, acting bilaterally stabilize the vertebral column.

Supply

Nerve Supply:
Dorsal rami of associated spinal nerves.

Clinical

These small muscles are implicated in proprioceptive feedback regarding the position of the vertebrae and vertebral column and in general postural control.
